Sassafras Leaf Earrings with Garnets in Sterling Silver
Sassafras trees hold a special place in my heart as one of the first wild foraged things I ever had. My family vacationed in Arkansas from Texas when we were kids and we tried sassafras root tea for the first time then, and I was enchanted. It has a deep red color like these luscious garnets, and tastes like root beer and earth and something else indescribable. In fact, that's where root beer gets its name; it was originally flavored with sassafras roots!
I also love how sassafras has three different leaf shapes, the only tree I'm familiar with that has this characteristic. The leaves smell amazing, like a mixture of root beer and thyme, and are dried and used as filé in gumbo. And to top it all off, in fall it is one of the most beautiful trees to turn, with a gorgeous orange and red hue that stands out from all those around it. This tree is just special and magical in every way!
These earrings are, as always, solid Sterling silver with two garnet cabochons, entirely hand fabricated by me.
